The RCC frames grid resulting in a building form which gives the earthquake prone student renewed confidence and a sense of safety

A safe shelter in the time of calamity which also offers openness and right environment for learning in remotes area of Kutch district

The Gujarat earthquake(2000) had wiped out many schools. Mainly Kutch district was affected by this, hence our world-renowned client Dr. Vargese Kurian thought of constructing schools for those unfortunate students who had no shelter. Amul relief trust appointed us, under his leadership, to design 7 schools in village Nana Asambia, Devpar, Rathadia, Motibadai, Kathada, Toda and Mangra. All the schools had identical features to be recognized as Amul school as per the available land and a requisite number of classrooms.

It was found that a sense of panic was hovering among the people of Kutch which demanded a building form which gives them confidence and a sense of safety. The RCC frames were divided into square grids at a closer distance and were made to be seen on the entire exterior surfaces, like a pack of gift securely tied up, making it completely earthquake resistant. All schools had similar features, with open to sky ribbed beam landmark entrance, a central courtyard cum assembly area helped to give each school unique identity and a traditional entrance ‘Darwaza’ was divided into a grid and had square cut-outs.

The challenge was to design that tackled harsh climate and dusty atmosphere. The paint shade was chosen very close to the hue of the local soil to create a sense of belonging where a character is born. Deep-set windows, lower sill assured sufficient light devoid of glare, blocked maximum radiation. Ventilators were at beam level as exhaust. Indoor space was to play, display and rejoice. The staggered arrangement of the classroom brought in more air. The corridor was inspired by village streets. The school also now acts as a community center.
